From the creators of Kali Linux and the Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP), comes an entry-level security certification.

Cybersecurity training organization, OffSec recently announced a new entry-level cybersecurity course and credential, the OffSec CyberCore Certification and its accompanying course, SEC-101: Cybersecurity Essentials. The course covers Windows and Linux basics, Python Scripting, Networking, Powershell, Data Transformation, as well as Frameworks and Standards, and other in-demand security related skills.

Since 2007, OffSec has successfully made a name for themselves in the security training space— primarily for red teamers and offensive security professionals. Approximately 27% of security professionals fall under this category. The majority of information security professionals are blue teamers, working on defensive elements of security — a relatively new market for OffSec. With the release of this new certification, along with intentional rebrand from ‘Offensive Security’ to ‘OffSec’, as well as the release of Kali Purple, the company has signaled its intention to transition into the broader security training ecosystem, something they describe as an evolution. It’s too early to tell, however, if this will have the intended effect of capturing a larger market share, or serve to dilute the company’s core brand identity.
